Folks who are thinking of purchasing the recently announced MacBook Pro would find new joy in hooking up those new notebooks to an HDTV via an HDMI adapter, will be able to enjoy the added ability of its Mini DisplayPort which is now able to send audio signals through to any device that supports them. Previously, the Mini DisplayPort can only transmit video, but glad to see Apple has introduced such a change to keep up with the times. that might just turn the MacBook Pro into a HTPC for some folks who have distant been itching to do so.

Apple could very well be working on a spanking new proprietary cable which will be able to transmit both USB 3.0 and DisplayPort details simultaneously, and should it actually roll out, it will go some way in reducing cable clutter where future Macs are concerned, enabling easier video output with portable devices as well. The patent applications from Apple for a “Reduced Size Multi-Pin Male Plug Connector” and “Reduced Size Multi-Pin Female Receptacle Connector” are touted to achieve a higher degree of functionality with greater details transfer rates with a reduction in cable connector scheme factor.

StarTech has a sort new bunch of Mini DisplayPort adapters that will see action on both Windows and Mac platforms, where the first of the three new additions would be the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. Using that, one can connect a VGA monitor or HDTV at resolutions of up to 1,920 x 1,200, which means you can additionally enjoy HDTV resolution. As for the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, it shares the same resolutions as the previous adapter but carries audio as well, and was specially manufactured to handle home theater Macs. Last but not least would be the Mini DisplayPort to DVI cable which will offer similar output for standard digital displays.Prices range from $25 to $30, depending on the model you pick.

The Kanex HDMI to Mini DisplayPort Converter basically does as it says – it allows users to hook up virtually any HDMI source device into a 27″ iMac, an LED Cinema Display or virtually any other Apple device which sports an mDP input (which includes sources like a PS3, Xbox 360 or Blu-ray player). HDMI 1.3 and DisplayPort/Mini DisplayPort 1.1a are supported, although assured limits do apply, depending on the source of your choice. It has a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 for standard DVI, while consoles are purportedly limited to sending native 720p. Expect the Kanex adapter to ship that April for $150, where it will be accompanied by the adapter itself and a 3-foot mDP cable.

AMD outs its latest ATI Radeon HD5450 graphics card, being the most affordable DirectX 11 (and OpenGL 3.2) solution in the market as at press date, retailing for no more than $60 a pop. Despite that highly affordable price point, the ATI Radeon HD 5450 has adequate muscle to support similar visual effects as with the 5600 and 5800 lines, although you get lesser stream processors at 80, alongside 8 texture units and a 650MHz engine clock speed. Thanks to the lower clock speed, temperatures won’t rise up that fast, resulting in a low-speed fan that won’t create a din whenever it is in use. Those who use a slightly larger chassis might want to take the fanless route for a change. Other features include Eyefinity support, dual-link DVI, DisplayPort and VGA.
This motherboard is so small, you might even signal it microscopic just to give an concept on how tiny it is. We’re talking about the Conga-BM57 Core i7 motherboard which measures a mere 5″ x 3.7″, which is more or less tiny decent to fit into your pocket without making an unsightly bulge of itself. Despite being that small, you will find that the Conga-BM57 can hold a 2.66GHz Core i7 processor, up to 8GB RAM, five PCI Express lanes, eight USB 3.0 ports, a trio of SATA, one EIDE and Gigabit Ethernet. We’re not done yet – you additionally get support for dual displays via VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, SDVO or LVDS. One thing that can’t do though is play the latest games in their full glory since you will be limited by its integrated graphics chipset from Intel. Still, expect to see even smaller PCs hit the market whether such motherboards compose a big impact in the market. No view on pricing as at press moment though.

Some initial knowledge on Intel’s successor to the Pine Trail platform has surfaced. The next iteration will be codenamed Cedar Trail and that 2011 update will be built on the 32 nanometer processor. Aside from that, it will take advantage of a new integrated graphics core, and additionally support DirectX 10, as well as HD video decoding. Other features should include dual digital outputs that support DisplayPort and HDMI, not to mention support for 1,066MHz DDR3 will plus be a welcome addition. It’s nice to see processor technology moving happily along, giving us faster and more efficient chips.

VESA has recently updated the Embedded DisplayPort Standard to Version 1.1a while drawing up requirements for the Video Interface to the LCD Panel in notebooks as well as various embedded applications.

eDP version 1.1a includes further definition on display authentication for protected video composition, addresses Sink device AUX channel interrupt requests, and makes enhancements to the 4-lane connector used for 3D display applications. eDP is based on the VESA DisplayPort 1.1a Standard. The DisplayPort Standard is oriented toward external applications with emphasis on interoperability amidst system vendors and interconnection cables. Newer PC chipsets and GPUs designed for notebook PCs support both DisplayPort and eDP from the same video port connections, enabling configuration options to the system integrator.

If you’re interested in the Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) Standard, that is available free of charge here.
