Whenever someone talks about the tablet device market now, Apple’s iPad is invariably mentioned, and with such a popular device in the market already, you’d think that most manufacturers would be scared to pit a new device against it. That being said, Italian kitchenware manufacturer Alessi obviously thinks that it’s up to the challenge, as it’s planning to bring the AlessiTAB to market come September. The tablet looks quite sleek, designed by Stefano Giovannoni, and will feature social media applications such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as being able to double up as a digital photo frame. It will come bundled with a docking station, which is going to be useful, and boasts a 6-hour battery life. The AlessiTAB will be going for about EUR300 ($400). Check out a video of it in the full post.

We might think that tablets are all about the Apple iPad, but guess what – the world is bigger than Apple products alone. Hanvon has released its Touchpad tablet which is powered by Windows 7, where it will be accopanied by a multi-touch sensitive display coupled with handwriting recognition and handwritten input. Functioning as an ebook reader and digital photo frame as well, you will find that the Touchpad is equipped with up to 2GB RAM, a maximum 320GB hard drive, an SD/MMC memory card slot, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a mini HDMI interface, a 1.3-megapixel webcam and an aluminum black case covered in anti-scratch material. The 10.1″ LED backlight panel has a resolution of up to 1,024 x 600 pixels. No view on pricing or availability, but good hardware alone isn’t going to produce a great selling device these days.
The Kenwood AS-iP70 digital photo frame might look like your run of the mill photo frame (albeit with a few more buttons), but it plus sports an iPod/iPhone dock, which can be tucked away when not in use. The AS-iP70 supports memory cards and USB flash drives, and displays the pictures on a 7-inch WVGA (800 x 480) TFT display. An AM/FM radio with alarm operate is plus built into the device. The only downside is that there isn’t any support for video playback. The Kenwood AS-iP70 will be released in April, and should retail for about 25,000 Yen ($274).

The Photo-U SP01 digital photo frame from AU of Japan is slightly different than other stock models, particularly when it relies on an integrated CDMA200 1xE V-DO connectivity capability which allows you to display all photos sent to a pre-determined newsletter address. Pretty neat, eh? Not that that is a new view, but at least you get constantly refreshed images thanks to the increased megapixel count of today’s contemporary handsets. Other features include a 7″ display at 800 × 480 resolution and 1GB of internal memory.

We’ve all gotten used to the current cell phone designs that are in the market nowadays, but don’t you think that cell phones should interact with us a little more? Designer researcher, Fabian Hemmert, was showing off three rather cool prototype phones at TEDxBerlin.

First off you’ve got a design where the weight of the phone can be shifted, making it heavier on the top, bottom, left or right. that could be used to let you know that you’ve got to form a left turn, or that there might be more composition in one direction (if you’re browsing a map for instance).

Next there is a shape-changing design, where the thickness of the phone might change. It could grow thicker, or part of the phone could become thicker, allowing it to stand on its side, becoming an alarm clock or digital photo frame.

The last is a rather weird “living” phone, where the phone can express its emotional state, and even have a “heartbeat” of sorts.

You probably won’t see these in mobile phones anytime soon, but who knows, right? It’s certainly cool sufficient to warrant more research into it.

Do you think that digital photo frames are a dying breed, what with the iPad’s recent announcement? Well, Transcend certainly believes in that niche market by unveiling its PF830 digital photo frame which features a smooth contoured shape, lustrous gloss finish and subtle etched hexagonal pattern that are pleasing on your eyes. In addition, it comes with an extra-bright 8″ digital LCD display at 800 x 600 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. You can choose to display photos from a USB flash drive, memory card of choice or through its own 2GB of on-board memory. Color choices are limited to just black and white – anything more and you might have to knock on ColorWare’s door. No word on pricing, but we do know it comes with AOS (Automatic Orientation Sensor) that makes certain you’re always looking at your favorite digital memories the right side up.
