Eliji Hayashi came up with a Laser Command game as his project for a class at Carnegie Mellon University. Why Laser Command? The reply is pretty obvious, since it uses a laser pointer as its primary gaming controller. An 8×8 LED matrix will operate as the display, where it will rapidly switch among producing light and sensing it. Since the laser is bright adequate, it is a snap to pick up the voltage which is generated within the matrix during the sensing periods. Programmed on an Arduino mini, the Laser Command game comes in a decently tiny mold factor for that added touch of cuteness.

Thanks to the newly released iPhone OS 4.0 beta 3, folks are beginning to find some additional features of the iPhone OS 4.0. Of course, since it’s still a beta, there’s no promise that the feature will be there in the final release, but there is a high chance of it making it to the final build. We’re talking about useful features such as easy file transfer, where you’ll be able to send files to your iPhone from your computer via iTunes. The inclusion of media player widgets is another gem, giving you more control by your music. Finally, for those of you who are constantly using your iPhone while on the bed, the orientation lock should be warmly welcomed, allowing you to keep the phone in portrait mode, regardless of whichever way you twist the phone.

As 3D is becoming increasingly popular, companies are continuously trying to compose 3D navigation easier, which is by no means a simple task. Now the folks by at Cambridge Consultants have come up with the Suma mouse concept, an interesting concept on how we might control a 3D environment. With the mouse, you’re able to go, pan, zoom and tilt in order to maneuver around the 3D environment. that concept can additionally recognize how the user is holding it and perform accordingly, making the process of navigating much easier. Check out a video of it in action after the jump.

You might have bought the latest tiny MP3 player in the market, only to find that you can’t stand using it considering it’s hard to control due to its size. What the folks by at the Carnegie Mellon University are exploring with their Minput project might be able to solve your woes. The project explores the possibility of using optical sensors to allow small devices to operate as mice. So instead of having to poke those tiny buttons on your MP3 player with a toothpick, you could instead move the MP3 player around the table like a mouse, scrolling vertically or horizontally. Check out a video of it in action after the jump.

What happens when you have a whole load of talent and too much day on your hands? Gijs was in such a situation, and decided to rip open his old school Game Boy and throw in some added parts to supply better sound synthesis control. A Little Sound Dj (LSDj) will see action here, and for folks who have no view what LSDj is all about, that is a popular Game Boy program that was used to churn out classic 8-bit sounds. What you see here comes with a potentiometer and circuit board to boot, making it look real classy.

Word is going around that Hulu might have to abandon its UK launch for the moment. Apparently advertising talks with ITV have broken down considering the broadcaster wants to focus on growing its own service – ITV Player. With that in mind, it isn’t too keen to syndicate out its subject matter to a third party. The main issue is that Hulu wants to be able to control the advertising that comes with the composition, something that ITV, Channel 4 and Five aren’t too comfortable with. With that, Hulu is said to have been forced to abandon its UK expansion plans after failing to sign any contract deals. Were you looking forward to Hulu in the UK?

You might remember Rovio, the electronic robot guard dog (that doesn’t look like a dog), but that date, things are a lot cooler. that is considering the Emotiv Systems’ headset is used to control the robot via Skype. Thanks to the Emotiv headset, your facial gestures and brainwaves are recognized, and used to control the robot. The signal will be picked up by a PC that is loaded with Roboclient, that interprets the commands, after which the commands are sent to another computer, via Skype, and finally transferred to the Rovio using the Robodance 5 app, giving you an obedient robot that can be controlled by your mind. Fancy, huh? Check out the video after the jump.

The Japanese are at the forefront of cutting edge technology most of the instance, and we do have word that they are working on a new project that involves mind control of consumer home products including air conditioners, where sensors will be able to tell from the body temperature in a room and build the appropriate adjustments to the temperature. Guess whether you start to feel as though you were about to freeze your family jewels off, your brain will inform the home system to increase the temperature, since pressing the button on the air conditioner’s remote control up by a few notches would be too much work, eh?

Details aren’t abundant at the moment, but reports are in that HP has launched a new motion sensing control, dubbed the HP Swing, by in India. The device will be offered with HP Pavilion PCs exclusively, allowing users to enjoy interactive games like tennis, bowling, pool and some others. The computer giant claims that that is the first moment motion sensing will be available on the PC, and pricing will start at about $670. So now computers are set to challenge the Nintendo Wii as well?
