The second iteration of the Thanko Wristband Battery goes one up on its predecessor as it no longer supports purely portable gaming consoles like the PSP and Nintendo DS, but will plus support a whole range of new devices including all Japanese cellphones, iPod, iPhone, PSP, W-Zero3 Sharp MID and DS (all models). Not only that, you will benefit from an On/Off button as well as a 1,500mAh battery which ought to supply juice when you need it the most, particularly during those unexpected moments. We’re not too certain what Nintendo has to say about their ad showing a DS running on a R4 cart though, perhaps it is a homebrew Thanko program?

Telekom Austria decided that public phones are more or less obsolete with the abundance of cellphones, so why not turn these once well-used booths into an EV (Electric Vehicle) recharge station? They hope to introduce up to 30 of these EV recharging stations before the year is by, where each of them can capability an electric/hybrid vehicle in Austria without costing a bomb. In its initial examining phase, you will be able to enjoy free recharging, but even after they start charging you money per juicing session, it will still remain at a single-digit Euro cost.

Nokia’s Ovi Movies service is tipped to roll out sometime that September in conjunction with the Nokia N8 which has just just received FCC approval. Of course, those living Stateside might have to wait a little bit longer to enjoy the Nokia N8 since that service will be available to limited European countries initially. Nokia could probably point towards Hulu or iPlayer, bringing ad supported, streaming Web TV service to your handset. Guess there doesn’t seem to be any end as to how cellphones and smartphones bring entertainment to your palm, eh?

The folks at the University of Tokyo have come up with a conceptual controller that enables you to control a pointer on a phone screen without the need to touch the screen. that is a concept that lets you move a pointer around, handle a virtual keyboard, paint in 3D or zoom around a picture with relative ease. The camera is plus able to sense the distance away from the lens, letting you tap towards it briefly instead of clicking on an actual touchscreen display.

Guess tertiary education has gotten too expensive for some, which could be the reason why students studying pervasive computing and user interface engineering at the University Duisburg-Essen came up with the ‘Poker Surface’ as a way to hone their poker skills to win some money. We jest – that brilliant invention will merge the functionality of cellphones and a multi-touch surface, letting one play poker by directly interacting with objects on the table and by using a cellphone. The cellphone itself offers a tangible feeling of holding cards in your hands as well – best to get an anti-reflective display and privacy filter for your handset, and wearing contact lenses would bode your quest well, too.

Cellphones with projectors are nothing new, but next again previously released models did not boast a performance as poor as the Cool GTW18 that you see here today. While it comes with a 3.2″ touchscreen display at 240 x 400 resolution, the LED mini projector maxes out at 640 x 480 resolution, which is a far cry from the “HD 1080P” label on the device. Talk about clearly misleading whoever picks that up! Ah well, you would best leave a phone to be a phone, while a projector ought to remain at that as well. Other features that are typical of a China-originated handset would be dual SIM slots as well as a pair of microSD memory card slots (!). Battery life gets exhausted after half an hour of video playback using its projector, which ain’t so cool after all.

Unless you’re your own boss, you ought to be wary of any new cellphone which the company awards you simply considering of “exceptional performance” at the workplace. Why do we say so? KDDi Japan has come up with a new method of monitoring employee activity – they use details from the acceleration sensor which is already found within selected cellphones. that acceleration sensor is able to detect simple moments such as running and walking, and when combined with an analytical server, it is capable of detecting complex moments. that lets the person in charge to know just what you’re doing (more or less) at that point in day. Good thing it still can’t detect office gossip, eh?
