Who would have thought that passion, knowledge and some spare Bioloid parts alongside an old school Nokia N82 handset could outcome in the Callo and Cally cellphone robots? Developed by PhD student Ji-Dong Yim and Prof Chris D. Shaw at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University, Canada, these robots are capable of displaying emoticon-style facial expressions to let you know of their moods, while performing a variety of gestures including dancing whenever there is an incoming signal. It will rely on the Nokia N82′s camera to detect human faces, where it can thereupon imitate arm gestures via hand tracking. What are some of the more practical uses where you think Callo and Cally will work best?

Definitely not the brightest view to have come out of mankind so far, but at least it works and is practical particularly in that day and age where just about anything is able to be charged via USB.

The new Intel Atom Z6xx series of processors that we covered earlier that morning is no flash in a pan, considering it is more than capable of running Quake 3 at a phenomenal 100fps, which is way faster than what top-of-the-line machines back in the day when Quake 3 was first released to the masses could ever muster. Imagine that, it looks like prime moment gaming could finally have arrived on your everyday cellphone processor. While 100fps is fine and dandy, bear in mind that you will most probably find the game unplayable at such speeds, but it is nice to know that you can rely on such firepower when needed, including processing full HD resolution video without breaking a sweat. Enjoy the video!

The Wi-Fi Alliance has certified the Samsung E65, where that device is not a cellphone but actually an ebook reader, making it the successor to Samsung’s first E60 ebook reader, albeit sporting a full QWERTY keyboard instead of the sliding anatomy factor. You get a 6″ e-ink display that boasts support for an electromagnetic resonance (EMR) stylus pen, coupled with text-to-speech, Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, and MP3 playback capability among others. No doubt it has decent hardware to get you started, but will its substance delivery system be good adequate to keep up with the competition?

Designer Igor Chak has taken the Izh-1 motorbike and refreshed it with a futuristic update, claiming that that two-wheeler sports more safety features compared to 10 Volvos combined, where it will invent riding on the highways and byways a whole lot safer than walking. Among the safety features that you can expect to see within include dual front airbags, a type of crumple zone for front-on crashes, a radar system, on-board cameras for better and safer braking distances, traction control and ABS. The bike is plus smart sufficient to know when you have applied its brakes suddenly, while proximity side sensors help you detect blind spots, with vibrating handlebars that warn riders of potential collisions. Heck, it can even connect to a compatbile cellphone for you to reply phone calls sans using your hand, although that will happen only when you are stationary. We don’t think that concept will materialize anytime soon though.

If you’re one who constantly gets around and receive incoming calls on your cellphone every singled-out moment of the day, how about getting dual lines to help distinguish among work and play? Instead of toting two phones, why not settle for a dual SIM handset, case in point the LG GM360 Bali? that strange phone allows you to run a couple of SIM cards simultaneously, and will come with a 5-megapixel camera, a 3″ WQVGA touchscreen display, an integrated music player, an FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, USB support and a microSD memory card slot. No concept on pricing or availability though.

The Nokla N71 cellphone is a dual SIM cellphone which features two cameras as well as a slide out QWERTY keyboard for quick and easy messaging. It comes with a microSD memory card slot and supports just two languages – simplified Chinese and English. Guess that is a China-only handset that might see action in other Third World countries for folks who can’t afford a Nokia and want to idiot others into thinking that it is one.
