It seems that the pre-release beta of iPhone OS 4 holds a new application which could very well see action in automobiles by controlling the device. Apparently, the new “iPod out” feature is included in iPhone OS 4, and can be used with the iPod Accessory Protocol in automobiles. Among the strings in the application include “IAPSSimpleRemoteCarButtonNotification” and “IAPSSimpleRemoteCarButtonTypeKey.” We could very well see that in an Apple-branded car kit, but we definitely can’t rule out third party manufacturers as well.

Magellan’s iPhone car kit has been given clearance by the FCC just a few days after it was discovered. Apart from that, the holder itself seems pretty decent to look at, although we are kept guessing as to the functions of the LED lens and rear slide button.

We’ve seen the TomTom iPhone car kit, but here’s the car kit for the iPod touch which is compatible with the first and second generation iPod touch, although you will need to have iPhone OS 3.0 or later up and running. The hardware will be “available shortly”, retailing for $20 cheaper than the iPhone version at $99.95. Any takers who want to expand the functionality of their iPod touch?

It comes as no surprise that the Apple App Store is dominating the application market for mobile phones. The App Store has the most apps according to Millennial Media at 115,000 compared to 13,000 for Android and 3,100 for Blackberry. The iPhone additionally leads in monthly downloads at 100 million.

Magellan launched its RoadMate iPhone app and car kit that week. The app is for turn-by-turn driving directions and the accessory is to hold the phone while you drive. The app costs $79.99 and is available now.
