Symbian 3 gets new design goes further than skin deep

March 10, 2010

Nokia has made it clear that it will revamp the user interface (UI) of its Symbian phones, and you might have seen the video above during Mobile World Congress. However, what's more interesting is that Nokia has removed a ton of legacy cipher and APIs, to form the clean break that was faraway overdue. We're getting closer to what was available on the N900 and some of the qualities are the same (the app switching UI is excellent), but the new UI is seemingly much faster and more fluid. With the new software architecture, comes new cipher that is not built to deal with last decade's problems such as lack of graphics hardware or horrible memory constraints.

The net conclusion should be much more responsive Nokia phones and interfaces. I'm glad that Nokia (and others) are seeing the light, considering Apple and Microsoft certain did too. Now, we're waiting for the actual hardware that we suspect might come out that summer at Nokia World.

No Flash for Windows Mobile 6.5

No Flash for Windows Mobile 6.5

If you happen to use a smartphone running on the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, next that isn't good news for you - it seems that Adobe has indicated that Windows Mobile 6.5 users won't be able to use Flash 10.1, as that version only applies to Windows Phone 7 owners. According to Adobe's Antonio Flores, "We have made the firm decision to defer support for that platform until WinMo7. that is due to the fact that WinMo6.5 does not support some of the critical APIs that we need". Android users will have to do a double take as well, since those handsets sans an ARM v7 Cortex chipset are additionally unable to download Flash 10.1 either. Bummer!

Google kills Gears

Google has just killed off its Gears by supporting HTML 5 instead. that news comes about as Google is about to release its initial beta version of Chrome for the Mac. According to a Google spokesman, “We are excited that much of the technology in Gears, including offline support and geolocation APIs, are being incorporated into the HTML5 spec as an open standard supported across browsers, and see that as the logical next step for developers looking to include these features in their websites.”
