Microsoft must be pretty blessed to have released an operating system so poor (Vista), that its next iteration, Windows 7, has become the fastest selling Windows OS in history, where it is currently installed in 10% of the world’s PCs. Launched on 22 October last year, Windows 7 has gone on to move by 100 million licenses. You would have thought that having being burnt by Vista, most folks would approach Windows 7 with caution, but guess Microsoft really rectified their past mistakes. Good job, big M!

Getting US broadband up to speed is a good concept, and a year after their National Broadband Plan, the FCC ‘s chairman unveiled the “100 Squared initiative” in today’s presentation at the Naruc Conference in Washington DC. The FCC intends to bring 100 megabits per second to 100 million households. Additionally, Julius Genachowski stated that the FCC should actively support even faster connectivity for the future, such as the Google’s one gigabit fiber-optics experiment bed. Wow! We all hope that good intentions will be followed by a well-crafted implementation…

You may have thought that Yelp was crazy to turn down a $500 million offer from Google a while back, but the review site has gotten a nice little windfall from Elevation Partners, a private equity firm in Silicon Valley. The firm has invested a good $100 million into Yelp, and Elevation co-founder Marc Bodnick will additionally be joining Yelp’s board of directors. Could 2010 be a good year for Yelp? Reports came in that Yelp first achieved a positive cash-flow late last year, and that’s certainly a good start. Are you happy that Yelp turned down the deal from Google at the 11th hour, or do you think it would have been a good movie?

After a towering wait regulators in South Korea have finally approved the iPhone and cleared the way for it to head into the country. KT Corp, the second largest carrier in Korea, plans to start taking orders for the iPhone on November 28.

It comes as no surprise that the Apple App Store is dominating the application market for mobile phones. The App Store has the most apps according to Millennial Media at 115,000 compared to 13,000 for Android and 3,100 for Blackberry. The iPhone additionally leads in monthly downloads at 100 million.

Magellan launched its RoadMate iPhone app and car kit that week. The app is for turn-by-turn driving directions and the accessory is to hold the phone while you drive. The app costs $79.99 and is available now.
