Piracy on the Web is an ongoing cat and mouse game that doesn’t look like it’ll end anytime soon. Now NEC Japan has another weapon up its sleeve to fend off piracy, as the company has come up with a technology that can find illegal copies of videos uploaded to the World Wide Web in seconds. that is achieved by creating a comparison piece that is just 76 bytes from the original that can be compared to the file in question. that technology is part of the MPEG-7 standard, allowing movie producers and ISPs to identify pirates faster and more accurately. NEC claims that the technology has a 96 percent success rate and false alarm rate of 5 in 1 million during checking. It’ll be interesting to see what is the next move by subject matter pirates and how they will circumvent that.

Amazing stuff – the multiplayer beta of Halo: Reach actually managed to attract more players in one day than the Halo 3 beta did during its entire run, which is by a million gamers. Assuming we extrapolate that data to the launch of Halo: Reach, you can be certain that Microsoft has a winner on their hands that day round, but we will just have to patiently wait until September for the game to be released.

Apple has reported earlier today that it has sold one million iPad in 28 days, comparing that with the 74 days that it took to sell a million iPhones. Earlier that month, Apple has delayed the worldly launch, citing supply constraints.

For certain, the device has been selling much better than skeptics had predicted and overall, it is a very interesting device (read our iPad review), but it additionally arrives in a much different world than the one in which the original iPhone was born: there are now tens of thousands of apps, and the eco-system is much bigger than it used to be next. Of course, selling that many iPad is very impressive, and looking at how lucrative the black market is (I saw a lot of iPads selling for about 2x the price in Hong Kong) I can predict that the universal launch is likely to be a success as well.

Reports are coming in that campaigns on the new Apple iAd platform for the iPhone could cost advertisers as much as $1 million. perhaps that high price will limit the ads we are assaulted with.

I mentioned yesterday that Apple had purchased Siri, the personal assistant app firm. The buy could herald new voice-activated search capabilities coming to the iPhone, which would be most welcome.
